In this follow-up to Minion (2003), Banks proves that vampire novels, like their vampire characters, often spawn progeny all too much in their own image. Events begin precisely where they dead-ended in the first novel, with rock 'n' roller cum vampire-slayer Damali Richards the prey of renegade vampire-master Fallon Nuit, who wants her eliminated for the grief she's caused him and his hybrid demon-vampire minions. The Vampire Council also seek to vampirize her and the child they scheme to seed her with before her 21st birthday. The council is depending on newly un-dead Carlos Rivera, Damali's ex-lover, to find her weak spot-but Carlos has his own agenda to retrieve his soul before he becomes an irredeemable vampire, and he secretly plays the council, Nuit and even Damali and her band against one another to achieve his goal. For all the double-crossing intrigue, choreographed bloodshed and physical mayhem, readers will find little in the plot to distinguish this novel from its predecessor. The author devotes most of her energies to fleshing out minutiae of her weird world, which includes elaborate hierarchies and biological imperatives that govern its hordes in the afterlife. The result is an ambitious but often slow-going fantasy that will appeal mainly to Banks's loyal minions.

Banks creates smokin' sex scenes that easily out-vamp Laurell K. Hamilton's, though they sometimes scream for tighter editing.

Banks gets down with her multicultural cast, as deeply concerned with their relationships as she is with their sacred mission: to vanquish evil and keep hell in hell and not messing with earth folks. The intimacy issues of her African-American diva heroine, Damali, with Carlos, a former vamp, can be as involving as the multilayered plot. At times, though, Damali's brooding over Carlos slows the pace. Thankfully, the action picks up once Carlos sets out to retrieve The Book of the Damned before the big war kicks off to free the lost souls who've escaped from hell, thanks to the evil Lilith, to infect humans and turn them into demons. The stunning climax shows that trying to shut hell's gates can be righteous. (Feb.)

Is he from the Light or from hell? Something is seriously wrong in the universe, and the forces of evil may be getting the upper hand. Banks lays a lot of wisdom on the line about male-female relationships, along with more of her complex cosmology that samples various religions, folklore and a wide array of myth. But it's the characters and their passions coupled with the author's wild imagination that drive the narrative. The story has gotten so complicated it may be difficult for a newcomer to fathom, but readers already enthralled with this sizzling series can look forward to major plot payoffs. (July)

Though this 11th installment in Banks' Vampire Huntress Legend tale contains many interesting references to esoteric religious mysteries and features titillating S&M sex scenes, it will be difficult for the uninitiated to give a fig about the multitudes of angelic characters who sit around wishing for non-gore spattered clothes and whining about their fallen companions as the apocalypse swirls around them. Most of the action is in Hell, where Lucifer and his wife, Lilith, are feverishly working to protect the Anti-Christ and bring about the end of days. Lucifer's right hand man, Fallon Nuit, is successfully using his multimedia empire to flood the airwaves with bad mojo, while Elizabeth Bathory gorily resurrects her husband, Count Dracula, and then bleeds and moans through some physically improbable sex with him and Lucrezia Borgia, Nuit's wife. Though a lot of ass gets kicked, there's so little forward momentum that the story becomes a soul-sucking drag.

Chicks are awesome--and never more so than when they are kicking some serious vampire/werewolf/demon/monster butt.

Chicks Kick Butt is an anthology that features one of the best things about the urban fantasy genre: strong, independent, and intelligent heroines who are quite capable of solving their own problems and slaying their own dragons (or demons, as the case may be).
