She needs to prepare herself.
And so do you.
There’s every chance this mission will kill us.
Afficher en entierPower rises, humming through me with insistent demand, and I lift my right hand, aiming my palm toward the sky of the open amphitheater.
Xaden vanishes from behind me a second before I release the strike.
"You're astounding," he says. "But you need to learn to find me." Shadows rush against my skin, and less than a breath later, they're gone, leaving me staring at Xaden's retreating back as he climbs the stairs. "This demonstration is over. I expect you all to come prepared next session," he says over his shoulder.
"Why me?" I ask, more than aware of the other cadets staring as I find my balance. "Xaden!"
He doesn't so much as pause his ascent. "Because you're the only one capable of killing me."
Afficher en entier“Do you still love me?” I hurl the inquiry at him like a weapon.
His gaze snaps to mine. “What kind of question is that?”
“Do. You. Still. Love. Me?” I enunciate every word and lean right into his space just to prove that I’m not intimidated by him.
He cups the back of my neck and pulls me within inches of his face—close enough to kiss. “I could reach the rank of Maven, lead armies of dark wielders against everyone we care for, and watch every vein in my body turn red as I channel all the power in the Continent, and I would still love you. What I did doesn’t change that. I’m not sure anything can.”
“See? You’re still you.” My gaze drops to his mouth. “Telling me you’re capable of horrible things while still loving me is pretty much your idea of foreplay.”
Afficher en entier“Dragons do not answer to the laws of humans,” she counters in a tone that reminds me of Tairn. “And as my bonded, as Tairn’s rider, you no longer answer to them, either.”
“Rebellious adolescent,” I mutter, forming half a dozen plans, half of which might work.
Afficher en entier“He isn’t a soulless venin. He’s still Xaden. My Xaden,” I snap, holding tight to the only thing I’m certain of as I make my way silently down the stairs.
Afficher en entier"[...] It may be General Melgren's army, but it's my school. Do you understand ?"
Gods, i fucking hate him.
"That you're an asshole ? Absolutely." Xaden holds up his finger. "And insulting you isn't against the Code of Conduct. I checked."
Afficher en entierI choose you. I choose whatever risk this brings. I see every part of you, Xaden: The good. The bad. The unforgivable. That's what you promised, and that's what I want - all of you. I can handle myself, even against you if I have to.
Afficher en entier"You get one chance to form your own squad, and you choose your ex, your current lover, the quadrants resident smart-ass, two people who have tried to kill you in the past year - one over said current lover - and whatever Dain is? These are your choices for the most important mission any rider could possibly undertake?"
"I'm glad someone said it," Tairn chimes in.
Afficher en entier"Sometimes I forget just how nearly perfect Bodhi is at everything," I say to Xaden.
[...]
"He's my cousin," Xaden replies, locking eyes with me. "Of course he's exceptional."
"Hmmm. Just like you, but without the arrogance." I cock my head to the side. "Maybe I fell for the wrong-"
"It would be a shame to kill my last living relative."
Afficher en entier"Because I don't think you can," Brennan answers gently. "Theophanie knows you'll try to save everyone like you did in Resson, or at Dunne's temple, or Basgiath before Mom..." He swallows. "That's why we'll fail. Because you will choose everyone over yourself, and he will choose you over everyone."
