"What ?" my face tenses. I can't seem to shake off what people around me say. I feel insulted by his remarks. Did I really get lost in his attractive face that much ? "I don't even know you."

"After all we went through on the bus ?" his eyes widen, and he cups his mouth with one hand. "I was so close to dying for you. All you had to do was ask."

"You'de die for me ?" I blink my puzzled eyes. "You just weren't ready to kiss me ?"

"So you changed your mind about the kiss," his smirk is like the devil, his dimples are angelic.

"I can make you remember amazing things."

"Like what ?"

"Like who the Red Queen really is. Why she chopped off heads. Who the Rabbit really was. Where the real rabbit hole exists. What a raven and a writting desk have in common. Why Lewis Carroll wrote this book. And a lot of the other things."

"How have you been, Alice ?" He has never asked me so politely.

"Mad." My favorite answer. I think I should copyright it.

"In my opinion, no one can save the world, Alice," he says. "We can save the ones we care about, the ones nearby, if we're lucky enough to be able to save them in the first place. Then once we save one, we go on to the next. One day at a time, Alice. One day at a time."

"So there are no miracles like saving the world?"

Lewis laughs. "There are two ways to live our lives, Alice. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle. I like the 'everything' part."

"I like it too." I say.

"Say 'Hi' to God for me Fabiola. Tell him I am sorry I smoked in his booth and killed in his church. Is there such repentance for that ?"

I wonder if evolution wasn't from ape to man, but from insane to sane.
