“Hey.”

“Come with me. I have to tell you something.”

I followed him behind the tent.

“What is it?”

He picked me up and took off into the woods. I laughed and wrapped my arms around him.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m kidnapping my wife.”

We shot through the woods.

“Do you even know where you’re going?”

“Yes.”

He turned and stopped. We were under a massive tree. To the right the narrow brook gurgled its way through the forest. A blanket waited under the tree next to a cooler.

“You planned this.”

“Yes, I did.”

He knelt on the blanket, still holding me.

“You look . . . You look.”

I cracked up.

“And whatever the hell that scent is from those flowers is driving me crazy.” He took my crown off and looked at me. “Nope. Not the flowers.”

I kissed him, tasting him, teasing his tongue, and he kissed me back, eager and tender. The kiss turned possessive, and when I came up for air, I wanted all my clothes off.

“I finally caught you,” he said. “You can’t get away now. I love you, Kate Lennart.” “I love you too, Curran Lennart,” I whispered, and kissed him, enjoying every delicious moment.

“You’re standing on a stage Dave Miller built for his daughter when she was a child.”

Saiman reached into the trunk and pulled out a pink tulle tutu.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“It won’t fit.”

“Elastic waistband,” Saiman said. “It will fit.”

Curran’s grin was pure evil.

“Don’t you dare,” I told him.

“It’s too bad the magic is up,” he said. “I’d take pictures.”

“Shut up.”

“Have no fear, Alpha,” Ascanio said. “We’ll tell no one.”

Kill me, somebody. Saiman held out the tulle skirt to me.

“Maybe it will work without it.”

“Don’t be ridiculous.”

“If I put this on, it will beridiculous.”

Saiman waved the pink tutu in front of me. Fine. I snatched it out of his hands and pulled it on over my hips. Ascanio collapsed into a moaning heap of laughter.

“Now what?”

“Move around onstage. It would help if you danced.”

Curran was dying. That was the only rational explanation for the noises coming from his direction.

"I'm not sure if I will even be me at the end of it."

A warm hand rested on my back. He'd snuck behind me. I straightened. His arm caught my waist, pinning me to him.

"I'll be there," he said. "I'll fight for you. We'll beat this. We've beaten everything else."

Je me redressais. Son bras attrapa ma taille, me rabattant contre lui.

"Je serai là." Dit-il. "Je me battrai pour toi. Nous vaincrons ça. Nous avons vaincu tout le reste."

"I've been looking into your future." Sienna moved toward the waterfall.

"I don't want to know." I didn't. Once you knew the visions, they chained you, forcing you down a predetermined path. It was best to make my own road.

"You do." Sienna turned to me, her back to the cascade. I sighed.

"Tell her," Maria snapped.

"If you marry Curran Lennart, he will die."

Someone reached into my chest and stuck a long needle into my heart. Sienna was almost never wrong.

"Parents." Roman heaved a sigh. "Can't live with them. Can't get away from them. When you try to move, they buy a house in your new neighborhood."
