Dans la ville pauvre d'un royaume où les faes sont plus puissants que les humains, Faythe, une orpheline douée pour le maniement de l'épée, sait qu'il est important de garder la tête baissée pour survivre. Lorsqu'elle attire l'attention de Nik, un garde royal, elle apprend rapidement que sa nature mortelle n'est pas la seule raison pour laquelle elle doit rester à l'abri des regards. Nik est un Noctiste, un assassin de l'esprit qui a le pouvoir d'entrer dans les rêves des autres.
