Agent Sean Delaney had worked deep cover jobs for the CIA, run critical missions for the Metahuman Defense Force, all without batting an eye at his orders. But getting ready for his first official date with Staff Sergeant Alexei Dvorkin left him distinctly nervous.
Eyeing himself in the full-length mirror in his bedroom, Sean deftly adjusted the knotted tie around his throat. The charcoal-colored silk matched his suit jacket and stood out against the crisp white button-down shirt he wore beneath it. His jeans were so dark a blue they were almost black and his Oxfords were perfectly shined. The business-casual outfit was more than nice enough to pass muster at most restaurants.
Sean had been back from a family visit for less than a week when Alexei had suggested they go on a proper date. Alexei had said for him to dress for dinner and a night out on the town, but their ideas of what that entailed were very different. Sean wasn’t going to show up looking slovenly.
He absently ran one hand through his brown hair before frowning at how that messed up the style. It took another minute of fixing before he was satisfied with how his hair looked.
“It’s fine,” Sean muttered under his breath as he smoothed down the lapels of his suit jacket for the dozenth time.
Sean was adept at taking on identities and living the lies needed to get the job done. Tonight, he was going to enjoy the evening as himself, with a man who liked Sean for exactly that reason. Dating was new territory though, and his stomach twisted a little when the chime rang through the apartment, announcing Alexei’s arrival.
