“There’s something else you should know about this guy.”
“What?”
Kovit sighed and leaned back. “He’s a kelpie.”
A kelpie.
Well, fuck.
“You want to trust a kelpie?” Nita was incredulous.
“You’re trusting me, and I’m a zannie,” he snapped.
Nita flinched. She swallowed and went to tell him that was different, but stopped, because it wasn’t, not really.
Nita sighed. “Fine. So you trust this kelpie?”
“Not at all.”

“Do you?” Nita leaned forward.
She was silent for a long moment.
“I know enough.”
“Do you trust him?”
She hesitated. “Yeah.”
Nita tilted her head to the side.
“Would you swim with him?”
“Hell, no!”

Kovit tortured random people.
Kovit went above and beyond to help his friends.

"You don't know me." Kovit's voice was cold.
It was an excellent strike. Very little blood, instant death from the spinal cord severing. Neat. Tidy. The kind of death Nita liked. Kovit really was good at what he did.
