When Sarah Tallow returns to the world of majik she left behind almost twenty years ago as a child, she is determined to take her place there and make something of her life. She's trained off-world in martial arts and weapons, skills the majik world hasn't used in more than a hundred years.

She applies to join the Patrol, a group of men and women, strong in their faith in the One God and oath-sworn to fight the evil growing in their world. Starting over as a lowly Patroller, Sarah has little training in majik.

Stefan Bane is Sarah's immediate supervisor, and the Patrol's second-in-command, a man used to working alone and getting even the most dangerous jobs done. His penchant for disguises and danger is notorious, as is his reluctance to let anyone close to him. He has sworn to fight the evil of the Sorcerer and the district's crime boss, Lord Hamish Blackmoor.

From the first time Stefan and Sarah meet, they are drawn to each other, both uncomfortable with the strength of their new feelings. Fraternization between superiors and subordinates is frowned upon. It's obvious to everyone around them, however, even while Sarah and Stefan argue over procedure, that these two are meant for each other. But can these would-be lovers put aside their differences long enough and work as a team to save their world?
