“He sighs. “I’m trying to keep things professional,” he says, motioning from himself to me. “Can we do that? Please?”
The pain I see in his eyes makes my chest hurt. “I’m sorry. I can be a real shit sometimes.”
He looks away. “It’s all right.”
“No, it’s not.” I take a step closer, wanting so much to reach out and touch him. He’s dressed in his detective uniform, and he’s so fucking handsome I could cry. And right now, he’s utterly untouchable, wound so tightly I’m afraid he might snap if I push. “Tyler—”
He raises his hand to cut me off. “There’s something I need to say, so I’m just going to come right out with it. Last night was a mistake. I shouldn’t have done that.”
“Done what? Let me kiss you?”
He nods, struggling to meet my gaze. “Yes. That was a mistake.”
My heart sinks.
As he swallows hard, his Adam’s apple rises and falls, the tendons pulling taut.
I take another step forward, half expecting him to step back, but he doesn’t move. “You didn’t enjoy it? I sure as hell did.”
He frowns. “It’s not—look, I can’t do this, okay?” Again, he motions between the two of us. “I can’t.”
“Tell me you didn’t enjoy it.” I close the distance between us, and he eyes me warily. “I gave you a chance to say ‘no’ last night, Tyler, to walk away, and you didn’t. Now tell me you didn’t enjoy it.”
He opens his mouth to speak, but nothing comes out except for a shaky rush of air. He’s tied in knots, and it’s killing me because I think he does want this. He just won’t let himself have it.
I approach him slowly, giving him plenty of time to protest, to back up or walk away. Hell, to even shake his head. But he doesn’t do any of those things. He stays rooted to the spot. His body is taut as a wire, his face flushed, and he’s breathing as hard as I am. He looks away, avoiding my gaze.
I lay my hand on his chest, my palm right over his heart. “Look at me, Tyler.”
He closes his eyes and sucks in a breath. “Ian, please—”
Please don’t. That’s what he’s telling me. Please don’t do this to me.
Shit! Reluctantly, I pull my hand back. “I think you want this as much as I do.”
He meets my gaze with a pained expression. “It doesn’t matter what I want. I can’t.”
“Why not?”
He shakes his head, as if he believes I couldn’t possibly understand what he’s feeling.
“Try me, Tyler. Talk to me.”
