After years in broadcasting as a radio programmer, DJ, and TV weathercaster, Tom Straw began his television writing career in 1985 as a Story Editor on the CBS sitcom MARY, starring Mary Tyler Moore. From there, he joined the hit NBC series NIGHT COURT, where his writing was recognized with “Best Comedy Writer” nominations for two consecutive years from the Writer’s Guild of America. Capping his second season at NIGHT COURT as a Writer-Producer, Mr. Straw garnered an Emmy nomination for “Best Comedy Series.”
He was Co-Executive Producer of the critically lauded Fox series PARKER LEWIS CAN’T LOSE in its first season, then went on to become Executive Producer of GOOD & EVIL (ABC) and NURSES (NBC). In addition to producing and writing NURSES, Mr. Straw directed multiple episodes, as he did for NBC's THE HOME COURT.
Tom renewed his association with NIGHT COURT star Harry Anderson as Executive Producer of DAVE’S WORLD on CBS.
Mr. Straw then became head writer and Executive Producer of GRACE UNDER FIRE starring Brett Butler.
After moving to the New York area, Tom became head writer and Executive Producer of the CBS series COSBY, starring Bill Cosby, and the NBC sitcom WHOOPI, starring Whoopi Goldberg. He later commuted to LA to write for The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on CBS.
Mr. Straw lives with his family in Connecticut where he continues to write books and develop TV projects.
