Captain Jamie Callahan had grown up attending countless exclusive parties, invite-only dinners, charity balls, and everything in between that the very wealthy endeavored to put on to show off their money. When he was a teenager, before joining the United States Marine Corps, he’d swaggered through a dozen parties a month put on by his peers. As an heir to one of the richest families in the world, Jamie was always at the top of everyone’s invitation list.
These days, his last name might be well-known, but he no longer was. More than a decade spent living on the outskirts of this lifestyle rather than standing in the spotlight meant he’d lost touch with almost everyone he’d known from his exclusive private school.
His mother seemed hellbent on changing that tonight.
“If you keep scowling like that, you’ll scare away any potential companionship,” Charlotte Jacqueline Callahan, née Montgomery, told Jamie.
Jamie knew for a fact he wasn’t scowling but smiling. If people couldn’t tell the difference, that wasn’t his problem. “I keep telling you I’m not interested, Mother. You know why.”
