Que le corps d'une jeune morte retrouvée nue dans un lac ne puisse être identifié rapidement, c'esi embêtant. Mais qu'un mari songe à signaler la disparition de sa femme trois semaines après sa mort, cela commence à intéresser sérieusement. Peter Diamond, dernier détective à l'ancienne au sein d'un Scotland Yard envahi par les ordinateurs et les « blouses blanches », spécialistes de l'identification génétique. Le malheur, de l'avis de Diamond, c'est que la police se trompe en accusant à tort un innocent. Mais que faire contre la technologie, contre les évidences génétiques qui s'accumulent? Renvoyé de la police pour insubordination, Peter Diamond en est réduit à travailler comme agent de sécurité chez Harrod. Il s'avère qu'il ne peut même pas tenir ce poste - il se fait renvoyer après avoir trouvé une fillette japonaise abandonnée dans le magasin après la fermeture. « Naomi », comme il l'appelle, présente des signes évidents d'autisme, et il se consacre à communiquer avec elle afin de découvrir son identité et de la ramener dans son foyer légitime. Des semaines plus tard, une Japonaise surgit de nulle part pour réclamer la petite fille, et il semble que le travail de Diamond soit terminé. Si seulement c'était vrai. Armé des seuls dessins de Naomi comme indices, Diamond se lance à la poursuite de ses kidnappeurs pour lui sauver la vie.

Etre flic n'était pas forcément une sinécure, mais ça permettait au moins d'avoir un salaire décent. L'ex-inspecteur Diamond commence à se demander s'il ne va pas poser nu pour des étudiants en dessin, quand les évènements l'empêchent de réfléchir davantage. Un assassin vient de s'échapper du pénitencier d'Albany. Clamant son innocence à qui veut l'entendre, il a enlevé la fille du chef de la police en guise d'argument convaincant. Et puis il n'en a rien à faire, de la démission de Diamond. C'est lui qui l'avait envoyé en prison, quatre ans auparavant. C'est donc à lui de rouvrir le dossier... Une crypte, un temps pluvieux, une jeune femme qui semble perdue, voilà les ingrédients parfaits pour un roman d'horreur mâtiné de gothique...Fausse piste. Car cette chapelle est le lieu de réunion de la très fermée association des Limiers, un cercle littéraire qui explique, analyse, décortique, tous les romans policiers parus et à paraître. De vrais spécialistes, de crimes fictifs, bien sûr...Du moins jusqu'à ce qu'un des membres éminents de cette société bien sous tous rapports soit retrouvé mort, assassiné, à n'en pas douter, par un de ses collègues émérites...

Qui est-elle ? Pourquoi l'a-t-on retrouvée inconsciente sur un parking d'hôpital ? Des questions qui risquent fort de rester sans réponse : à son réveil, elle a perdu la mémoire et ne se rappelle même pas son nom. Alors, quand une autre jeune femme trouve la mort en tombant du toit du Royal Crescent, et qu'un nouveau crime atroce est perpétré, le superintendant Peter Diamond est convaincu que ces événements sont trop suspects et nombreux pour ne pas être fiés. Mais son enquête commence mal. La jeune amnésique, supposée être la clé de cette énigme, a disparu. Bath, ville du crime... En certains lieux se terrent bien des secrets. Par exemple, cette étrange crypte sous l'abbaye de Bath, d'où surgissent de déconcertantes découvertes : une main scellée dans du béton - récent -, un crâne de femme jauni par les ans, beaucoup de poussière et pas l'ombre d'une explication... De quoi mettre à l'épreuve l'impatience légendaire de l'inspecteur Diamond qui voit d'un mauvais œil le remue-ménage médiatique autour de cette cave voûtée : elle aurait, selon une rumeur de plus en plus persistante, abrité Mary Shelley pendant la rédaction de son Frankenstein... Comme si ça ne suffisait pas, un universitaire monomaniaque, quelques antiquaires et un mystérieux marionnettiste semblent s'intéresser de très près aux énigmes du sous-sol, au 5, Abbey Churchyard. Bien entendu, certains y laisseront des plumes, d'autres leur vie.
