Egypte, 1818
Le palais d’A’Qadiz… En entendant ce nom dans la bouche du consul d’Egypte, Celia retient son souffle, l’esprit soudain assailli par de somptueuses visions de cours intérieurs, de soieries précieuses, de parfums capiteux. La nouvelle mission de son époux lui permettra, au moins, d’échapper à la vie ennuyeuse où celui-ci la cantonne depuis leur récent mariage. Mais alors qu’ils approchent de la principauté, leur convoi est attaqué par des troupes rebelles. Son mari est tué et Celia ne doit la vie qu’à l’intervention d’un mystérieux cavalier. Un homme au regard sombre en qui elle découvre qu’il est en réalité le prince d’A’Qadiz en personne. D’abord rassurée, Celia sent sa peur resurgir quand elle entend son hôte donner l’ordre de la conduire au harem. Certes, son statut de veuve la protège, elle le sait, mais pour combien de temps ?

But George, her husband, seems more interested in her playing the nurse than a wife, and Celia is beginning to wonder if the match has been a huge mistake. En route to the exotic kingdom of Q'adiz, they are set upon by bandits and George is killed, leaving Celia at the mercy of the kingdom's fiercely attractive prince, Sheikh Ramiz al-Muhanna.
