The Celestial Council.
These are the men who stole Wyatt from me.
The ones who betrayed and tried to kill my dad.
The ones who are responsible for royally screwing my life at every turn.
They stare at me, each of their faces illuminated from below by triangular panels within the marble slab. It gives them a haunting glow, casting shadows over their eyes as they look out at me. Observing me. Assessing me.
I do the same, taking in the arching row of them one by one, making eye contact and letting them know I won’t back down. Their silence stretches as we continue our staring contest, and it makes me uneasy.
What are they waiting for?
“I am Jesse James Storme.” My voice bounces around the circular stone room. “Twin to Wyatt Earp Storme. Daughter of John Jackson Helm.”
A moment of silence follows my introduction, then, before I can say anything else, all of the nine begin speaking at once.
“No female has gone through the vault,” one of the men hisses in a whisper.
“What does this mean?” another asks.
“Surely, it’s a mistake.”
“Or John has devised the deception somehow.”
“The vault will reveal if she truly is one of us.”
“And if she’s not, it will be her end.”
