Lorsque les parents de Chen sont incinérés devant ses yeux par l’explosion d’une foudre en boule, il jure de consacrer sa vie à l’élucidation de ce phénomène. Sa quête le mène dans des laboratoires militaires d’armes expérimentales et dans une station scientifique soviétique désaffectée en pleine Sibérie.
Il comprend bientôt que la foudre en boule constitue la manifestation d’un plan de réalité jusqu’ici inconnu, découverte-clé qui pourrait expliquer la plus singulière de ses caractéristiques : sa sélectivité (elle est capable d’incinérer une personne à l’intérieur de ses vêtements en laissant ceux-ci intacts). Si l’homme apprend à diriger cette sélectivité, il détiendra l’arme ultime.
Comme dans la trilogie du Problème à trois corps, Liu Cixin excelle à donner une forme romanesque aux concepts les plus abscons de la physique. Boule de foudre est un page-turner d’exception.
