Chapter One
MAGGIE SAT ON THE floor, covered in dust, casting evil glances at the ripped up pieces of cardboard near her legs and the step stool in front of her. The poor books lay everywhere at odd angles like washed up pieces of driftwood. She couldn’t help but muse: This has to be a metaphor for my life: old, dusty, and washed-out.
She climbed to her feet, the metal of her ID tags clanking together as she brushed the grime from her jeans. Wearing them became a habit a long time ago and she had yet to break it, even though the slapping metal reminded her daily of what she lost. Changing before interviewing employees later would take longer now that she actually needed to clean herself up. A potential boss covered in dust, cobwebs, and only God knows what else, didn’t inspire confidence in potential employees
I might as well try to get some more work done while I’m dirty. She bent to start retrieving her fallen merchandise and the sharp pulling pain in her hip surged up, reminding her of the scar’s existence. Straightening with a huff, she clutched her side. This is getting old. The doctors warned her healing takes time and adjustment to a new lifestyle. They further warned of physical therapy (which she adamantly refused), and patience (something she’s never been blessed with). Yet another reminder of the life she loved before a bomb ripped it all away.
“Screw it,” she said, as she decided to focus on another task.
